CR AU: Into the Pines
Magnus remembers visiting the town of Wayward Pines once with his new husband, Alec Lightwood, before moving there. While driving across the United States, their car broke down outside of the town and they were forced stayed there several nights while their car was being fixed. Meeting the locals and being easily accepted by them inspired the couple to move there and settle down a short time later, though all of these memories are false.● abilities:
After experiencing a car accident—another false memory—Alec was the first person Magnus remembered upon sight. They both shared memories of kissing at weddings, presumably their own, and found what they believed to be wedding rings in their personal belongings. They also owned a large house that they were informed they had bought before the car accident. Believing themselves to be newlyweds, they started befriending the townsfolk and settling into the life they couldn't remember choosing for themselves but were happy for the opportunity to live. Having experienced discrimination from multiple sources back home, they saw Pines as a fresh start.
Spending most of their time adjusting to "mundane" life among humans, the couple made friends and connections within the town. Again, their friendships were strengthened with false memories of certain townsfolk, but they never questioned anything. Having Alec's sister, Isabelle, come to live with them further solidified the life they were building for themselves in Wayward Pines. Magnus started to believe that they could have a family of sorts made up of friends and loved-ones.
Then monsters attacked the town, and that image of a perfect life came crashing down. They joined the battle against the creatures, Magnus nearly draining himself of all energy to help protect defenseless citizens while others were fighting. This led to the revelation that the town was not as happy and quaint as it appeared, and was actually an arc to save humanity from a deadly mutagen that raged beyond the town's walls. This led Magnus to seriously rethink his place in the world, especially given that many of his memories may not have been real. However, as his memories of marrying Alec are tied to New York, he still believes them to be true.
Magnus' relationship with Alec Lightwood was definitely the most influential part of his stay in Wayward Pines. Though they are canonically dating, they were given memories of knowing each other longer than they have in reality which adds weight to their relationship. Additionally, they lost many memories of specific events as well as the details of their lives. All of this is important because they are from different versions of the same universe: Magnus is from the television show, and Alec is from the books. Though the characters and general plot are largely the same, there are also huge differences in the timeline and events. These differences would normally lead them to discovering that they were from different dimensions, causing several problems for them. Other than dealing with the knowledge that they don't know each other as well as believed, they could also become unsure of whether or not they should carry on with a relationship as it might feel like they're "cheating" on each others' real partners. However, with memories of being husbands as well as the three months they spent together as a married couple in Pines, that concern would be greatly lessened.
Another important aspect of Magnus' time in Pines was how he started to build a life away from the comfort and familiarity of New York. As one of the oldest warlocks around, he had become jaded and largely closed off to building any kind of relationship with humans as well as the majority of Downworlders. However, during his time in Pines he experienced both "normal" life as well as survival events which drew him closer to his community and humans in general. Because he was forced to believe he had chosen a domestic life and settled down in what he thought to be a normal town, he became far more open to letting new people into his life. This was strengthened by Isabelle Lightwood's arrival as she lived with the married couple and further intensified the feeling of having a family to protect rather than just himself.
Physically, Magnus appears to be mostly human with a few key differences. Warlocks bear physical manifestations of their demon blood called "marks," which for Magnus are golden cat-like eyes with vertical slit pupils. His demon blood also makes him immortal, and he has stopped aging, though he is by no means invincible. Also, being a warlock gives him the Sight that allows him to perceive the secret supernatural world as well as see through glamors.
As a warlock, and a very old and experienced one at that, Magnus is able to perform a wide variety of spells as well as brew potions. Most commonly casting magic with his hands, his fingers spark with blue flames when performing a spell. He can be limited by a couple of things: the supplies at his disposal, the amount of energy he has, and any previous knowledge of whatever magic he's attempting to cast. Below is a list of magic he's been seen performing, from most common to least, and I'm happy to leave the nerfing up to the mods to decide what needs to be limited.
CR AU: Other than magic, Magnus is also trained in weaponized and hand-to-hand combat. He favors medium-range melee weapons, such as the guandao or sword. He's also decent at archery, sometimes favoring magical arrows rather than physical ones. He's received training from a couple of Shadowhunters, and while he doesn't have the natural skill or grace of one, he can handle himself in a fight if necessary.Glamors: a passive magic that hides something from view, either by turning it invisible or covering it with a disguise; Magnus uses one daily to hide his cat eyes and make them appear brown Conjuring: either creating items or transporting them between desired locations; limited by the need to know where something is located before he can manipulate it Portals: transport people anywhere they can picture clearly in their minds; no limit to the distance, though there's strong evidence portals don't work between dimensions Wards: a variety of magical barriers that can keep out demons or other attackers as well as quarantine an area by locking everyone within Fire: what it says on the tin; sometimes playful and harmless blue magic, other times dangerous red flames Healing: can cure a variety of magical conditions, via potions or spells, as well as reduce pain; has also been seen doing some mental/spiritual healing, such as keeping a soul tied to its body when it was threatening to wander Tracking: can locate people using items that belonged to them; doesn't work across large bodies of water Summoning: can call demons, either from freely walking around on Earth or from the demon dimension; can also contain them within pentagrams, though more powerful demons can't be controlled for very long Offensive: physical blasts of magical energy used to attack opponents Defensive: shields of magical energy he can use on himself or others Inspection: depicted in a variety of ways, but essentially able to scan areas for magic, demonic influence, etc Strength transference: can drawn energy from Shadowhunters and possibly other sources of magical energy, such as those with demon blood or, cross-canon, other abilities; has also given strength to others when healing wasn't an immediate option Memory manipulation: able to remove memories as well as recall them and manifest them into physical images
● strengths:
Magnus, for all his talk of not opening up to mortals, is dedicated to those closest to him. Because of his history of being confused and alone as a young Downworlder, rejected by his family at the age of nine, he has a habit of taking in people who are like him and in need of guidance. Simon Lewis is one example as a recently-turned vampire who is abandoned by his sire and refused help from the leader of the New York coven. Though Magnus doesn't know him well personally, he agrees to help him though it means turning on a former lover. Magnus also becomes intensely loyal to Alec Lightwood after seeing how unhappy and unappreciated he is. Magnus works hard to help Alec be happier and more confident despite how others treat or view him because of his sexuality.
Magnus also has a strong sense of duty as High Warlock of Brooklyn though he markets himself as someone who only looks after himself. Magnus is protective of other warlocks, giving them shelter or rescuing them from danger. Despite disliking and distrusting Shadowhunters, Magnus allows himself to be pulled into their war because he believes that he needs to help protect the Downworld from destruction. Arguably, this is due to a selfish desire to stay alive, but there are other examples of his sense of morality. When it's discovered that Camille, a former lover and long-term friend, has been breaking the law by turning humans into vampires unwillingly, Magnus aids in her capture and arrest. Despite his long history with her, memories of how she helped him in dark times, and lasting feelings for her, he still does what is right by turning her in.
Confidence is another strength that Magnus possesses. The first is that he has confidence in his abilities, knowing the strength of his magic and often flaunting it as a way to show off. Yet he doesn't trivialize it, expertly using magic when fighting as well as being aware of the realistic limitations that he has. This makes him very practical about whether or not he is able to assist others with his magic, or in some cases whether he should in the first place. Secondly, he is confident in his bisexuality and doesn't allow others to look down on him because of it. This is one of the reasons he's able to realize the struggle that Alec has with his sexuality as well as help teach him to understand that there is nothing wrong with being gay.
● weaknesses:
Though Magnus does have a history of taking care of his small found family, he has the tendency to distance himself from everyone. Having lived centuries, he's experienced not only loss of those he allowed himself to be close to, but he's also seen a lot of the ugly parts of humanity, Shadowhunters, and Downworlders. Though he puts up the facade of feeling various surface emotions, most of them fleeting, he is largely jaded as well as callous to the point where it can be doubted if any of his feelings are genuine. He enjoys toying with others, flirting for momentary thrills, and otherwise distracting himself with hedonistic pastimes. He doesn't feel much compassion for people who end up in situations designed by their own stupidity, and he doesn't indulge others in unrealistic plans or fantasies because Magnus is surprisingly pragmatic, for all his decadent hobbies.
Another product of Magnus' long life and countless experiences is that he can be rather elitist and discriminatory. Magnus has a negative view of humans due to the fact that they have systematically feared and sought to destroy things that they don't understand. Magnus also feels superior to Shadowhunters, both because of their strict adherence to the unyielding and often unrealistic Law that guides their society and, ironically, because of their own elitist beliefs that Shadowhunters are superior to all other beings. There's an interesting play within Magnus between feeling superior because he is a warlock, and also some darker feelings due to his demon ancestry.
However, once Magnus does allow someone to get close to him, they can be considered a weakness as well. He operates on two extreme ends of the spectrum, either uninterested in helping those he is unattached to or willing to risk his safety for those he loves. The best example of this is Alec Lightwood. Magnus allows himself to be draw into countless dangerous situations that he would otherwise steer clear of due to his preference for remaining uninvolved with the politics and power struggles between Shadowhunters.
● job skills (optional):
● housing (optional): high preference to share an apartment with Alec Lightwood; also, if possible, living on the same floor as any other Shadowhunter cast would be fantastic
